5. The Forbidden City, Tian Tan, and The Summer Palace

No visit to Beijing is complete without exploring the amazing scale, history and architecture of the Forbidden City, the home of many Chinese Emperor's, eunuchs and military personnel. Buildings and artifacts are preserved in the "Palace Museum" - the Chinese term for the Forbidden City. It is a must-see and you will need from half of a day to a full day there simply to walk from one end to the other.

Tian Tan means temple of Heaven. This is where the Emperor would go on prayer pilgrimage once per year at least. The beautiful park and glorious temple and hall structures make Tian tan and its "9 dragon echo wall" well worth spending a half-day or day out to visit.

The Summer Palace was built by the Empress Dowager, Cixi (1861-1908) as a retirement home. A walk through the Summer Palace grounds leads to a great lake called: "yi he yuan" upon which a pedal boat can be hired or a great dragon boat ridden.

We explore these sites and others in Beijing, such as Beijing's answer to Disneyland - "Happy Valley" in our China Adventures section.
