Why Travel
In China?
| China is vast. Imagine, a
country roughly the size of Canada with around forty times the
population! That makes it the most inhabited country on the planet.
Over 19% of the world's population live there. Now that is both big and
busy. Here's why to travel in China... We are lucky to be living in an age where changes in policy mean that China is well into "opening up to the world" policies that began tentatively around the reform era starting 1978 with development zones being selected in coastal areas for investment. This goes for more than just business and investment though It means that China has been becoming an ever-increasingly popular tourist destination. |

After landing in China for the
first time, three things struck me personally as being different. First
of all, the vastness of the cityscapes was beyond comprehension. The
sheer size of the major cities is
phenomenal. The second thing is the amount of people. China puts a new
meaning to bustling. People live in close proximity with one another,
all day long. High rise apartment buildings reach the clouds and on the
Chinese tube or
underground, trains can get packed tight.
The third and most obvious thing that you notice is that everyone is Chinese. I know that may sound ridiculous, but if you have not done a great deal of travelling outside of your own country, like a lot of Americans, it really makes a difference when you realise that living in China is kind of like living on a slightly different planet. There are so many differences, in culture, cuisine and attitude, that these differences tend to vastly outweigh the similarities.
The wonderful history of China is largely preserved in its
countless
museums, such as the Forbidden
City
in
Beijing, the Ming Tombs and Terracota Warrior Army and
reflect that China has been around a long time as a "civilised
country." The richness of China's long history is held proudly in the
hearts of Chinese, it is as though the Chinese people's very psyche's
have a connection to the entire spiritual and historical past to which
each family in China seems to have an anchor, whether it is by
displaying the "Bagua" on the front door (see picture left) or the
hand-making of "jiao zi" -
Chinese dumplings, steamed or fried and usually either containing pork
and herbs or egg and "Jiu Cai" - Chinese garlic/leek - as a
family event.
China is proud of its rich heritage both in terms of its knowledge and wisdom and accomplishments and achievements. Whilst nothing can quite prepare you adequately for a vacation in China, that is, if you are to really experience China for yourself, the articles on this site aim to give you a solid foundation and background on a multitude of Chinese nuances, from simple etiquette, such as which way to point your teapot spout at a dinner table, to what to do in an emergency, such as your passport having been stolen.
The amazing history, the vastness of the country and its tourist attractions as well as the unique Asian culture of the people make China an absolute must-visit destination. China has absolutely changed my own life. It will make you feel that if you haven't visited China, you truly haven't lived.
